Bare softwood is not silent. Cedar, cypress, redwood, pine, and fir slowly give off aromatic compounds, the same oils that make a fresh board smell so good when you cut it. A female carpenter bee picks up those compounds through receptors on her antennae. To her, the message is short and specific: soft, dry, seasoned, safe for eggs.

She has good reason to be selective. That bee is about to chew a nearly perfect half-inch entrance hole, turn ninety degrees, and tunnel with the grain for six inches or more. Damp wood rots her brood. Hardwood dulls her mandibles. Bare, weathered softwood splits the difference beautifully, which is why fascia boards, deck rails, pergolas, and barn eaves take the worst of it.

Paint Isn't a Smell. It's a Wall.

Here's the part most folks get half right. Paint helps because it forms an actual film across the surface — a sealed skin that traps those wood odors underneath and gives her nothing familiar to grab or test. Oil-based paint holds up best. Stain, on the other hand, soaks in rather than sitting on top, so it barely slows her down. Clear sealers are even weaker.

Before she commits, a female is essentially running an inspection:

  • Scent — does this board smell like untreated softwood?
  • Texture — can her mandibles get purchase on a rough or weathered face?
  • Shelter — is it tucked under an overhang, out of rain and direct sun?
  • History — are there old galleries nearby? Abandoned tunnels carry scent markers, and returning bees reuse and expand them year after year.

That last one explains why the damage compounds. One tunnel this year becomes three next year, and woodpeckers eventually come looking for the larvae.

So Should I Just Paint Everything and Call It Solved?

We wish. Painting a two-story gable line is a weekend and a ladder most people would rather skip, and paint does nothing about the bees already living in your boards. Coating helps future wood.   • Weeks two to four: the jar starts filling as bees enter the angled holes and drop toward the light.
  • Midsummer: fresh drilling slows noticeably.
  • Next spring: far fewer returning bees, because the previous generation never emerged.
